Drawing on Your Vision and Imagination

Whether you're designing a single building or developing an entire town, architectural illustrations can make the critical difference in how your clients, the public, government officials, banks and investors will perceive the merits of your project. Architectural illustrations are often the first tangible expression of your vision. It is the first time others will see and understand what your project looks like and how it will fit in and change the existing space.

Every architectural illustrator has his or her own style of expressing your ideas. Some illustrators strive for photographic realism. Others express your ideas more artistically using color and gesture to give a feel for the project rather than any attempt to define specific details. The kind of architectural illustration you need often depends on why you need the illustration and at what stage of design you are currently in. When a project is in the schematic stage a loose and expressive architectural illustration is often the best solution for giving clients and investors a vision of what the project will look like without locking yourself down to details that may not be part of the final design. For a design already in construction documents, a detailed architectural illustration with specific details will show clients, investors and other stake holders your exact vision for the project highlighting its most salient features.

The navigation on the left side of this page will take you to examples of the many different types of architectural illustrations we do. As you will see our goal is to strike a balance between detail and artistic expression. When you need an architectural illustration, you need it to be as accurate and detailed as the stage of design permits. Yet illustrations must also express a feeling for place that photographs or computer generated images often lack.

If you like the style of architectural illustration you find here give us a call or drop us an email. We look forward to working with you on your next project.

What is a Charrette?

A charrette is a series of intensive planning and design sessions where citizens, architects, planners, designers and others collaborate to create a vision and plan for future development.  These forums have the unique advantage of giving designers immediate feedback and discussion between the community and the designers. Throughout the charrette, formal and informal meetings are held and updates to the plan are presented.

The job of the illustrator during the charrette process is to help visualize the ideas and concepts created during the design process. Drawings must be produced quickly, and yet stay faithful to the unique sense of place and spirit of the design concepts.

See our Charrettes page for examples of all our charrette and quick sketch work.
